Today’s Classroom

Kozo, Cotton, Fishing line 15x7x9ft
Our installation symbolizes the stagnation of classrooms today. Teachers are facing high levels of burnout due to high stakes testing and art classes are suffering because of a lack of a standardized curriculum. In Virgina, arts classes are being cut down to steal more time for core classes to prepare for standardized testing. The classroom is in disarray with apples and writing utensils thrown about and a student’s desk is held up on shaky legs - with the No Child Left Behind Act students are being pushed through the system without learning the material. The casts are made in two parts using kozo, fusing the pieces together much like classrooms are haphazardly put together with what little materials teachers can get. The fishing line is used to hang paper airplanes and crumpled balls of work to freeze the classroom in a moment of chaos that signifies the disarray of undereducated adults.
